On the eve of AFBL Season 8 (08-09)
The day before the ABFL season begins is always a special time. It makes me look back at all the amazingly bad shot selection, the passes to no one, the dribbles off of feet and the joy in everyone’s face after a made basket or the end of a long drawn out game. Season 8 has been marred by the economic crisis – but like the lockout NBA season we are set and ready for a furious season none the less.
A few words about the ABFL which probably bear repeating for the new season. First, everyone must bring your $20 dollars. This money does not go into an AFBL slush fund. It goes to the Philadelphia Parks and Rec department to pay for the gym usage. In this year especially, I want to pay them promptly – so bring your Franklin$ on Saturday. Secondly, the play has changed over the years and it’s time we got back to the fun style of old. This means no calling traveling (except on yourself), no unnecessary fouls, and keeping the foul calls to an absolute minimum. In the beginning we only played “prison rules” or “no blood no foul.”
Each person at AFBL has his/her own ability level and we want everyone to have fun and participate. The competitive nature of people playing a game will always come and bring the intensity level up – this is natural and makes it fun. We need to balance that with a positive, playful, not-serious tone.
With all that said – I will still talk trash and shoot an inordinate amount of circus shots.
See you on the hard linoleum of McCall.
