Weekly Design Links – 03/12/24

I often debate the decision to post these on Tuesdays. We all know about Mondays–they shock the system. Monday night, when I put these together is not always ideal. I’m often tired and motivation is fleeting. Once in a while, I’ll get up early. But I’m not an early riser by nature. I like Tuesday for other reasons and I’ve heard from some of you that Tuesday works. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. If it doesn’t kill you, it makes you stronger. The proof is in the pudding. I don’t understand that last one. I had to look that one up, just now. It fits…

The proof is in the pudding is an expression that means the value, quality, or truth of something must be judged based on direct experience with it—or on its results.

The expression is an alteration of an older saying that makes the meaning a bit clearer: the proof of the pudding is in the eating. In other words, things must be judged by trying them yourself or seeing them in action, rather than on other factors, such as hearsay.

With that, I’ll leave you to the links.

Korean designer Jaehyung Chu believes vinyl’s resurgence isn’t one merely attributed to an aesthetic, but also representative of a generational trend toward reconnecting the divide between music and listener, a connection absent while using streaming audio services.

Design Thinking

“Wherever you get your podcasts” is a radical statement
Because what it represents is the triumph of exactly the kind of technology that’s supposed to be impossible: open, empowering tech that’s not owned by any one company, that can’t be controlled by any one company, and that allows people to have ownership over their work and their relationship with their audience.

Halli Shall Be Released
A designer’s lifetime quest to figure out who he really is. (And what that sounds like.)

The Rebalancing of Design Management
Too many times, I’ve heard a design manager or leader described by their cross-functional partners as “not strategic enough,” which often is a signal they keep the design work and product strategy at arm’s length, focusing instead solely on team dynamics and people-focused work.

Art

art block by Ayumi Tan
Not too long ago, I found myself facing a creative block. To keep it short, I eventually began to wonder if I could craft an artwork surrounding this theme. This led me to working around the word ‘block’ itself, bringing me to the idea of deconstructing my object into tiny pieces.
