Humans are strangely affected by numbers, patterns, chords, and repetition. We gravitate towards them like moths to a light. We can’t look away. We seek them out in chaos. We constantly try to bring some logic to the thousands of data points in our vision. We want things to make sense, to see the system behind the chaos, and we’ll often create a logic where there is none to satisfy our need for order. Smart data folks know this. Correlation is not causation. Our brains aren’t interested in facts. The brain needs to connect the dots. I’ve read (and felt) that the brain is a story machine. It tries to create a narrative from all of the inputs. Dreams are a great connector of leftover thoughts, visuals, and moments–and usually, these end up in some crazy story during REM. These stories have little to do with truth but people labor over their meaning anyway. What does all this have to do with beautiful links? Nothing, but I’m sure your brain can find a story to make it fit.
