And just like last year, nothing went to plan. There was more change in my life, the pandemic is still happening and my reading time was inconsistent. But, 46 isn&#8217;t too shabby and I got through some really long books this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also the same as last year, my reading selections are all over the map. Biographies, sci-fi, economics, graphic novels, sociology and more. There are quite a few biographies in the mix this year\u2013twelve, which is over 25%. Once again, audiobooks played a big part in my reading mix. The movie <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt6866224\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt6866224\/\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;The Hummingbird Project&#8221;<\/a> is based on a similar story, but is not the sanctioned adaption. It&#8217;s a super interesting story about technology, money and greed. This story is still happening today with apps like Robinhood and others selling transaction data for profit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/36613747-how-to-change-your-mind\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/36613747-how-to-change-your-mind\" target=\"_blank\">How to Change Your Mind: What the New Science of Psychedelics<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/author\/show\/2121.Michael_Pollan\">Michael Pollan<\/a> details the recent science along with the history of psychedelic research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/26889576-the-big-short\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/26889576-the-big-short\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;The Big Short&#8221;<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/6687247-too-big-to-fail\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/6687247-too-big-to-fail\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Too Big to Fail&#8221;<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/8834784-all-the-devils-are-here\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/8834784-all-the-devils-are-here\" target=\"_blank\">All the Devils are Here: The Hidden History of the Financial Crisis<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/author\/show\/65798.Bethany_McLean\">Bethany McLean<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/author\/show\/69837.Joe_Nocera\">Joe Nocera<\/a> details the backstory of the 2008 financial crisis and the mechanisms that continue to exist in Wall Street finance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I used the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tenpercent.com\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.tenpercent.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">app<\/a> first. I learned more about <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/author\/show\/7890536.Dan_Harris\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/author\/show\/7890536.Dan_Harris\" target=\"_blank\">Dan Harris<\/a> and his on-air panic attack and then stumbled onto the book <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/18505796-10-happier\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/18505796-10-happier\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;10% Happier&#8221;<\/a>. Meditation has a woo-woo identity, but the approach here is more practical, science-based and does not require that you wear anything tie-dye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The classic <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/393199.Down_and_Out_in_Paris_and_London\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/393199.Down_and_Out_in_Paris_and_London\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Down and Out in Paris and London&#8221;<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/author\/show\/3706.George_Orwell\">George Orwell<\/a> is known but less often mentioned or quoted. But, it&#8217;s as relevant and timely as any of his work. In these increasingly polarized and all-or-nothing society I found this really inspiring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/20980987-the-art-of-asking-or-how-i-learned-to-stop-worrying-and-let-people-hel\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/20980987-the-art-of-asking-or-how-i-learned-to-stop-worrying-and-let-people-hel\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;The Art of Asking&#8221;<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/author\/show\/1010543.Amanda_Palmer\">Amanda Palmer<\/a> isn&#8217;t the kind of book I would normal read. I wasn&#8217;t a fan of her music or artwork but I related to her story and appreciated the insight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/18736925-capital-in-the-twenty-first-century\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/18736925-capital-in-the-twenty-first-century\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Capital in the Twenty-First Century&#8221;<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/author\/show\/795282.Thomas_Piketty\">Thomas Piketty<\/a> is a book that generates strong opinions among certain people. Elements of the book are dated, but the overall thinking and core are super important to reflect on in these times. It&#8217;s not an easy or short read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I grew up skateboarding and Vans are a mainstay of skateboard culture. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/54578728-authentic\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/54578728-authentic\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Authentic&#8221;<\/a> by founder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/author\/show\/20514448.Paul_Van_Doren\">Paul Van Doren<\/a> gives the whole backstory and is also a lesson in business and ethics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/816.Cryptonomicon\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/816.Cryptonomicon\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Cryptonomicon&#8221;<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/author\/show\/545.Neal_Stephenson\">Neal Stephenson<\/a>, well anything by Stephenson is charged now, but it has &#8216;crypto&#8217; in the title so it&#8217;s about crypto-currency, right? No. It&#8217;s about WWII, code breaking and the story crosses time. It&#8217;s super long, detailed and I liked it. I am a bit of a nerd though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/35167685-surely-you-re-joking-mr-feynman\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/35167685-surely-you-re-joking-mr-feynman\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Surely You&#8217;re Joking, Mr. Feynman!&#8221;<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/author\/show\/1429989.Richard_P_Feynman\">Richard P. Feynman<\/a> is a series of essays or glimpses of the life of this amazing scientist. It&#8217;s not all science and gives you a pretty good idea of the mind behind a curious and unique thinker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;ve been aware of James Baldwin for many years and I still have a lot of his catalog in my &#8216;to read&#8217; list but <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/25090194-james-baldwin\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/25090194-james-baldwin\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;James Baldwin: A Biography&#8221;<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/author\/show\/6980880.David_A_Leeming\">David A. Leeming<\/a> is a really great biography by his long time archivist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/108713.Pimp\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/108713.Pimp\" target=\"_blank\">Pimp: The Story of My Life&#8221;<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/author\/show\/40508.Iceberg_Slim\">Iceberg Slim<\/a> has been sighted by a wide range of smart people. It&#8217;s not a book for everyone, but if you can get beyond the raw details, there&#8217;s a lot of human nature woven into the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The &#8216;Remembrance of Earth&#8217;s Past&#8217; trilogy: <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/20518872-the-three-body-problem\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/20518872-the-three-body-problem\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;The Three-Body Problem&#8221;<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/23168817-the-dark-forest\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/23168817-the-dark-forest\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;The Dark Forest&#8221;<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/25451264-death-s-end\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/25451264-death-s-end\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Death&#8217;s End&#8221;<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/author\/show\/5780686.Liu_Cixin\">Liu Cixin<\/a> merges aliens, time travel, mutli-dimensional space and so much more into a deep and engrossing story. These books are not light sci-fi, but they are worth the time and effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In America, debt is such a loaded concept. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/6617037-debt\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/6617037-debt\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Debt: The First 5,000 Years&#8221;<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/author\/show\/29101.David_Graeber\">David Graeber<\/a> breaks down the history of debt, religion and how we got to the present state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I love basketball and by extension <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/author\/show\/635591.Kevin_Garnett\">Kevin Garnett<\/a> is an iconic character. His autobiography <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/56123027-kg\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/56123027-kg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;KG: A to Z: An Uncensored Encyclopedia of Life, Basketball, and Everything in Between&#8221;<\/a> is full of amazing mini stories and insight into the mind of KG.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/39667068-acid-for-the-children\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/39667068-acid-for-the-children\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Acid for the Children&#8221;<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/author\/show\/1233416.Flea\">Flea<\/a> tells the early story of his life. It doesn&#8217;t go into fame and success\u2013but everything before. It paints a picture of Los Angeles from a young, hungry kid that I&#8217;ve never heard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/49483062-don-t-panic\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cDon\u2019t Panic\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/author\/show\/1221698.Neil_Gaiman\" target=\"_blank\">Neil Gaiman\u2019s<\/a>&nbsp;biography of Douglas Adams.&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/386162.The_Hitchhiker_s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cThe Hitchhiker\u2019s Guide to the Galaxy\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;was one of my favorite books in high school and I\u2019ve re-read many times over the years. This biography is well done and written by someone who clearly loves Adams and his work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/52098718-why-we-re-polarized\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cWhy We\u2019re Polarized\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;by&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/author\/show\/4412018.Ezra_Klein\" target=\"_blank\">Ezra Klein<\/a>&nbsp;is a biased but well written and well researched look at our current political situation here in the USA. It does offer a few glimpses of hope, but in the 2+ years since it\u2019s publishing, I wouldn\u2019t say we\u2019ve taken these ideas to practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I really love&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/3272165-bad-science\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cBad Science\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;by&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/author\/show\/1387272.Ben_Goldacre\" target=\"_blank\">Ben Goldacre<\/a>. Written by a doctor, it gives the reader a framework for looking at science, medicine and reporting in general with a clear, skeptical, fact-based eye. If you\u2019ve ever accidentally shared fake news, thought about doing a cleanse diet or just want a more informed look at media then this is worth a read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The autobiography&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/53714202-sid-meier-s-memoir\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cSid Meier\u2019s Memoir!: A Life in Computer Games\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;was written for nerds like me. I\u2019ve been deep down the Civ rabbit hole many, many times. I love getting a look behind the curtain and seeing how the creative process works and this book doesn\u2019t disappoint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/35020353-the-poisoned-city\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cThe Poisoned City: Flint\u2019s Water and the American Urban Tragedy\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;by&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/author\/show\/14025461.Anna_Clark\" target=\"_blank\">Anna Clark<\/a>&nbsp;is a detailed look at the Flint water crisis. It gives the details of all of the tragic events but also goes into the history of how this came to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For 2022, I\u2019m shooting for 50 books. I\u2019m behind schedule already, but maybe once the pandemic is over I can get my reading schedule back to some normal cadence.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recap of my reading for the 2020 Goodreads Reading Challenge.
