But, it\u2019s a admirable goal and they do a great job of bringing together a diverse group of people and disciplines. The mix of people and content is why I keep coming back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"d842\"><strong>Pre-Conference Kickoff Party<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"3165\">Why not get started a day early? A lot of the attendees gather to pre-register and hang out for a few hours at a nice hotel with a lot of fine cheese and cured meats. Some of the sponsors get to show off their new toys and tools.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiltbrush.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Google Tilt Brush<\/a>&nbsp;was running live demos, allowing people to put on the headset and paint in 3D.&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.adobe.com\/products\/capture.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Adobe<\/a>&nbsp;was running a live collaborative drawing experiment. People were encouraged to draw something, scan with the iPads and then the drawing leader was grabbing elements from the public for inclusion in the final drawing. She examined the changing landscape of work and presented some clear methods for getting ahead in this uncertain professional landscape. She described these as \u2018work\/life freedom strategies\u2019 and she laid out three key tactics: Do a skills audit &amp; industry audit, be a translator (someone who can bridge areas of expertise and bring people together) and lastly, give yourself wiggle room. We all have plans, but don\u2019t beat yourself about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"f2b3\"><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@eejackson\"><strong>Liz Jackson<\/strong><\/a><br>I have tried to explain this a few times verbally to friends and have failed miserably\u2013let\u2019s try again\u2026<br>Liz Jackson is a disability advocate and told some of her story about how she came to this field. Her passion and intelligence on this subject needs to be heard by more people. Culturally \u201cwe are trained to look away\u201d from the disabled. She believes that this attitude undermines the value that \u201cdisabled ingenuity\u201d brings to the rest of us. Many popular products were developed by the disabled and then brought into the mainstream, she sighted the bicycle for example. \u201cDisability is a social construct\u201d and if we continue to view different abilities and less we only undermine our own value. As accessibility in web design has grown in awareness, hopefully in product design the same thing can happen\u2013thanks to people like Liz Jackson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"4235\"><strong>Mike Perry<\/strong>&nbsp;(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/mikeperrystudio\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">@mikeperrystudio<\/a>&nbsp;on Instagram)<br>This talk was a somewhat rambling but entertaining tour of Mike Perry\u2019s work, studio and thought process. He talked about his studio as a ship and his love of Star Trek the Next Generation\u2013and how in his studio on any given day they can decide what the next adventure will be. He went into detail about his project around drawing naked people and how the goal of learning to draw people led him to some interesting new experiences. He showed some of his commercial work as well as explained (loosely) how he\u2019s gone from illustration to animation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"0e49\"><strong>Day 1: Midday \u2014 Navigating the Unknown<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"9f76\"><strong>Bryan Lamkin<\/strong>&nbsp;(<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bryanlamkin\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">@bryanlamkin<\/a>&nbsp;on Twitter)<br>An interview style chat with one of the leaders of Adobe\u2019s product group. He talked about the importance of mobile and social and how it\u2019s changing people\u2019s consumption of content (photography and video). My ears perked up when he talked about experience design as a vehicle for \u201cholistic problem solving.\u201d The last key point for me was how Adobe is tackling AI and where it\u2019s embedding machine learning into its products. He sighted content aware fill as one example of this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"0ca8\"><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/u\/56e26948dfc1?source=post_page---user_mention--9d0293f56647--------------------------------\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Julia Kaganskiy<\/strong><\/a><br>The director of the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newinc.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NEW INC<\/a>&nbsp;at the New Museum gave a detailed look at her work developing this art and design incubator. This process is similar to what every project, startup or growing business deals with and she gave some great guideposts for managing the chaos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"d404\">Hope for the best, prepare for the worst<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"21b0\">\u201cGetting comfortable with uncertainty\u201d, is something, as a self admitted control freak, she\u2019s been learning and taking to heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"280e\">On navigating the unknown<br>\u2022 Start with why<br>\u2022 Find your tribe<br>\u2022 Make a plan<br>\u2022 Be ready to learn and adapt<br>\u2022 Focus on process vs. result<br>\u2022 Approach challenges with honesty<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"7d35\"><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/u\/3f5dbabb6556?source=post_page---user_mention--9d0293f56647--------------------------------\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Rick Webb<\/strong><\/a><br>Best known for his work at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Barbarian_Group\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Barbarian Group<\/a>, he gave a detailed history of how that all happened and then the aftermath. I can\u2019t really explain the details of his adventure, but one thing that did resonate with me was that creating a company is like giving birth to a child. It will exist with or without you and there will be times that you\u2019ll need to step back and let it go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"ee05\"><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/u\/f8025419d9c8?source=post_page---user_mention--9d0293f56647--------------------------------\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Scott Belsky<\/strong><\/a><br>The founder of&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/99u.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">99U<\/a>&nbsp;finally hit the main stage\u2013and he made it count. He jumped right in with his phased approached to making things happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"cc02\">Phase 1: Make Ideas Happen\u2013Mission centric medium agnostic<br>Phase 2: Collaboration\u2013Powerful enough for pros but accessible to everyone<br>Phase 3: Supporting Mission Driven Teams\u2013The first mile is neglected<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"4398\">Collaboration and reliance on your team builds and grows your team\u2019s strength. Most products do one of two things: save you time or spend your time\u2013he views this duality as a battle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"6dc3\">The last section of the talk dove into how a user interacts with your product in the first moments (15 seconds) and how lazy, vain and selfish we can be when evaluating a new product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Users don\u2019t want to make the wrong choice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prioritize new user needs over power user\u2019s experience<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>People rely on relationships and trust over data<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We favor novelty but gravitate towards the familiar<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Familiar is the enemy of innovation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"d9eb\">If we \u201cstay grounded by the new user\u2019s experience\u201d we can keep focused on the metrics that matter and ultimately deliver a better end result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"761c\"><strong>Day 2: Morning \u2014 How to Fix Design<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"ed66\"><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/u\/6d23645ba40b?source=post_page---user_mention--9d0293f56647--------------------------------\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Irene Au<\/strong><\/a><strong><br><\/strong>When the designer becomes the client everything is flipped and she explained what she learned during the process of working with Architects.<br>1. Choose your projects intentionally \u2014 don\u2019t spread yourself too thin<br>2. Present multiple alternatives \u2014bring your stakeholders in early<br>3. Prototype: from low to high \u2014 there is fallacy in the fidelity, every launch is a prototype<br>4. See the opportunity<br>5. Get the details right \u2014 find the right talent at the right time<br>6. Be the arbiter of taste<br>7. Approach the work mindfully<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"5fa3\">I will state here that this list pales in comparison to actual talk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"846f\"><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/u\/719df77a5fe?source=post_page---user_mention--9d0293f56647--------------------------------\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Natasha Jen<\/strong><\/a><br>The talented designer started with a bold statement, \u201cDesign thinking is bullshit.\u201d She went on to point out her key problem with the current trend of the design thinking buzzword\u2013the missing element is that we have omitted critique. Data can inspire but data won\u2019t save you. He then went into an interesting examination of how comics develop their craft and its mirror process in making. Beyond just getting laughs, when an artist decides what the goal of their work is and works relentlessly towards that end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"71b1\"><strong>Day 2: Afternoon \u2014 Invention &amp; Reinvention<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"41ad\"><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/u\/168dab556633?source=post_page---user_mention--9d0293f56647--------------------------------\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Paul Ford<\/strong><\/a><br>A machine for inspiration (his title)\u2013how tools become part of us and our process. I like the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.debbiemillman.com\/designmatters\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Design Matters<\/a>&nbsp;podcast but if you were already aware of her story, this talk wasn\u2019t anything new. I\u2019ve been to three and I hope to return as often as life will allow. The 99U conference is an amazing event and the people who are there are equally amazing\u2013and I don\u2019t just mean the speakers.
