R2-D2 is and Indie Rocker
# 1
by Jef Czekaj
One of the best things I ever got in the mail. R2-D2 is in an indie band named “Hyper Truck” and these comics tell the story of the band. Seems silly, but the format allows a lot of fun to be poked and good times ensue. I don’t wanna give away the ending, but Darth Vader makes an appearance. I believe there are more issues of this zine, so I’ve named this listing as #1 even though it doesn’t say that anywhere.

This is a great little book of cartoons and writings. The style is unique, with high contrast and clean lines. The whole book is very well put together. The cover is printed in yellow, and it the first edition the cover is embossed. Some personal bits, some funny bits, and allover good stuff.

Defy #6

Defy
# 6
by Ed Jankowski
I own a re-issue copy of Defy #6. I wish I had the original. This zine is a hard look at what was widely hailed as the east coast’s crown jewel of street skating in the early 90s. Love Park was and still has a sweet spot for anyone who skated there. There were some foul deeds, part of it’s legend, and some amazing skateboarding. Ed takes a long hard look, and bravely tells it like it is, warts and all.

Moneyproof Wallets

Moneyproof Wallets
Moneyproof Wallets
by Andrew Jeffrey Wright
Andrew Jeffrey Wright’s solo show at SPACE1026 gave birth to this zine. It’s more than half screenprinted, by hand. There are many color pages, and many hand done sticker pages. This zine takes zines into art and doesn’t look back. That doesn’t mean that this book is snooty. Classic AJW style, lots of amazing cartoons, drawings and collaborations with Thom Lessner, Crystal Kovaks, Ben Woodward, Courtney Dailey, Molly Perry, and Isaac Lin. Andrew puts so much love into his books, and then he goes and charges like $3 for them. It’s criminal.

Media Locals Zine
# 8
by John Freeborn
The issue with Jeff Wiesner on the cover. Why? I have no idea. Photos of skateboarding, involving Adam Crawford, Dave Opdenaker, John Freeborn, Woodward Skate Camp, and a story called “A Skateboard Fable” that I actually used as a college entrance essay. It worked, I got in. Raw as most Media Locals Zines are, photocopied.

Chips Closet Cleaner #13
Chip’s Closet Cleaner
# 13
by Chip Rowe
Chip Rowe has an eclectic taste. This zine embraces that. There are articles about the bionic man, postal scams, boring museums, and my personal favorite, an article written by two women (possibly an early zine) about the NBA in the 70s. The zine is offset printed and has a two color offset printed cover.
